In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Give it a good stir to ensure everything is well mixed.

Next, take a large bowl and place the softened butter in it. Add sugar and vanilla sugar to the bowl, then beat the mixture with a mixer at medium speed until it becomes creamy.

TIPS: If your butter is too hard, a few seconds in the microwave can soften it up and make it easier to whip.

TIPS: Instead of using butter, you can opt for good quality margarine. It works just as well! But keep in mind that margarine contains salt. So, you might want to reduce the amount of salt in the recipe. Just a little heads up!

Easy German Apple Cake

Ingredients:

  • Apples – 2 pcs. (200 g)

for the dough

  • Softened butter – 1/4 cup (60 g)
  • Sugar – 1/2 cup (100 g)
  • Vanilla sugar – 1 sachet (10 g)
  • Eggs – 1 pc. (50 g)
  • Flour – 1 cup (160 g)
  • Baking powder – 1 tsp. (5 g)
  • Salt – 1/3 tsp. (2 g)
  • Milk – 1/3 cup (83 g)

for the sprinkle

  • Melted butter – 1 tbsp. (14 g)
  • Ground cinnamon – 1/2 tsp. (1 g)
  • Powdered sugar – 2 tsp. (8 g)

additionally

  • Powdered sugar

Cooking steps:

  1. Wash the apples, remove the core, cut into thin slices.

Dough

  1. Add flour, baking powder and salt to a medium bowl and stir.
  2. Place softened butter in a large bowl, add sugar and vanilla sugar, beat with a mixer at medium speed until creamy. Add eggs, mix thoroughly.
  3. Gradually add half of the flour mixture to the egg-butter mixture, then pour in the milk. Add the remaining half of the flour mixture, and mix with a mixer at low speed until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a pre-greased and floured 20cm baking tin. Level the top with a spatula.
  5. Place apple slices on top in a circle.
  6. Bake the cake in an oven preheated to 180°C (350⁰F) for 35-40 minutes. Leave the finished cake in the tin for 5 minutes. Remove from the tin.

Sprinkle

  1. Add powdered sugar and ground cinnamon to a small bowl and stir.
  2. Brush the top of the hot cake with melted butter, sprinkle with cinnamon mixture and powdered sugar.

    Super tasty cake. I do it a second time, but it doesn’t rise?!
    I thought the problem was in unheated milk, but it still doesn’t rise.

    1. Hello! Most likely the problem is with the baking powder. Perhaps it is weak, then you need to put it 2 times more. It is best to look at the package to see how much baking powder the manufacturer recommends adding to a certain amount of flour. Or maybe the baking powder has already lost its effect.
      Old baking powder is easy to check following these instructions.
      Or you can make baking powder yourself at home from just 2 ingredients.
