How to Make Foil Baking Tin and Paper Springform Pan at Home
Why bother buying a baking tin when you can easily make your own? Creating a baking tin with your own hands is simple and fun.
All you need is a regular baking sheet, aluminum foil or parchment paper, and you’re good to go! Just a few easy steps and your custom baking tin is ready to use.
How to Make Foil Baking Tin at Home
To make a foil baking tin, all you need is aluminum foil and a baking sheet. The great thing about making your own tin is that you can customize it to any size or shape you need.
For a sturdy pan, it’s best to use thick food foil with a thickness of 0.2 mm. This will ensure that your pan is strong and durable, without needing to be folded as often as thin foil. The thickness of the foil is usually indicated on the packaging.
So, pick out your baking tin shape and let’s get started on creating your very own custom baking tin!
Step 1
First things first, you gotta figure out how big your baking tin is gonna be. For example, if you want a 20cm (8 inches) round baking tin, the circumference will be around 63cm (25 inches).
Remember back in math class when you learned that the circumference of a circle is 2π r? Or just ask Google!
Once you’ve got that number, it’s time to cut the aluminum foil.
Step 2
Measure out a strip of foil that’s the same length as the circumference (63cm (25 inches) for our 20cm (8 inches) round baking tin).
Fold it in half vertically, then fold it in half again. You should end up with a strip that’s 5cm (2 inches) wide and 63cm (25 inches) long.
Step 3
Now, take that long strip (you can also make a heart or square shape if you want). Lay it out on the table so it looks like a baking tin without a bottom.
Step 4
Grab another piece of foil, any length will do. Lay it out on the table and place the ring you made in the center.
The flat piece of foil will be the bottom of the pan, and the ring will be the sides. Easy peasy!
Step 5
Fold the bottom piece of foil up over the edges of the shape you created, making sure to keep the bottom flat.
This way, you’re basically connecting the base of the baking tin to the sides and securing them together. You definitely don’t want the dough leaking out!
If you want to make the base stronger, just repeat this step.
And if you want to really make sure there are no leaks, you can use tape or a stapler to attach the bottom to the sides.
It’s best to connect the bottom and sides of the baking tin at a ninety-degree angle.
Step 6
To keep things stable, place the prepared pan on a baking sheet. This will also make it easier to slide the pan in and out of the oven. All that’s left to do is grease the pan with oil and pour in the dough. Now your cake is ready to bake!
The best part about using a homemade baking tin is that you can just toss it out when you’re done – no need to wash it! You might not even need to buy a baking tin at all.
How to Make Paper Springform Pan for Cheesecake at Home?
Interested in making your own paper springform pan? Let’s dive into the process!
When baking delicate treats like cheesecake, a springform pan is typically used to ensure the dessert maintains its shape. This is crucial because cheesecake can easily fall apart if not handled carefully.
To prevent your hard work from going to waste, the bottom and sides of the pan need to be detachable. A springform pan has a clasp on the side that allows for easy removal of the cheesecake once it’s done baking.
But what if you don’t have a springform pan on hand? No worries! You can easily make your own using parchment paper instead of foil. All you need is some parchment paper, a baking sheet, and a stapler.
Check out my article on “How to Substitute Springform Pan: 4 Easy Alternatives” for some creative alternatives if you don’t have a springform pan available.
Save yourself the hassle of buying a special springform pan if you only bake this dessert occasionally. Making your own paper springform pan is a simple and cost-effective solution.
Step 1
Start by cutting a strip of parchment paper to the same length as the circumference of your cheesecake. If you need help figuring out the length, check out the first step in the previous instructions.
For example, if you’re making a 12cm (5 inches) cheesecake, your strip should be about 38cm (15 inches) long.
Don’t forget to add an extra 2-4 cm to make sure the strip stays in place when you form it into a ring.
Step 2
Next, fold the strip in half lengthwise so that it matches the height of your cheesecake.
This will make the sides of your pan stronger and more stable.
Step 3
Roll the strip into a ring, using a round object like a jar or vase to help shape it.
Staple the edges of the strip together to keep the sides of the pan from falling apart later on.
Step 4
Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the ring on top. Fill the ring with a crust mixture, like crushed shortbread cookies mixed with butter. This will seal the gap between the ring and the bottom of the pan, preventing the cheesecake dough from spilling out.
It’s important to note that this method works best with a cheesecake that has a cookie, dough, or corn flake base. The tight press of the cheesecake base at the bottom ensures that the pan won’t leak.
Step 5
Your parchment springform pan is now good to go! Fill it with a mixture of ricotta or cream cheese and pop it in the oven to bake.
Once the cheesecake is done, simply remove the paper sides of the pan for a perfect sweet treat!
Now you have two simple ways to create a foil baking tin and a paper springform pan from scratch. Enjoy baking!
