how to cook French Zucchini Puff Pastry Tart?
STEP 1
To start, preheat your oven to 200⁰C (400⁰F). Now, let’s get cooking! Begin by cutting your bacon strips into squares.
STEP 2
Next, grab a vegetable peeler and slice your zucchini into thin strips. Lay the zucchini on a paper towel to soak up any excess liquid.
TIPS: Both zucchini and courgettes can be used for this recipe.
TIPS: For this recipe, it’s best to use medium-sized zucchini.
STEP 3
Now, it’s time to grease those zucchini ribbons with some vegetable oil.
TIPS: Applying vegetable oil to your veggies is a breeze with a silicone pastry brush. Alternatively, you can also use spray oil.
STEP 4
Once they’re nice and greased up, place them in a single layer on a grill pan that’s been preheated over high heat. Let them fry for about 2-3 minutes on one side, then flip them over and cook for a few more minutes. Once they’re done, transfer them to a plate.
TIPS: Don’t worry if you don’t have a fancy grill pan. A regular frying pan or even an electric grill will do the trick just fine.
STEP 5
In a medium bowl, mix together some processed cheese, an egg yolk, dried garlic, and dried marjoram. Make sure everything is well combined.
TIPS: Instead of using dried garlic, you can opt for a small clove of fresh garlic as a substitute. To prepare it, finely chop or use a garlic press to extract its flavor.
TIPS: Not a fan of marjoram? No problem! Experiment with other dried herbs that tickle your fancy and complement your dish.
STEP 6
Take your puff pastry, which should be defrosted according to the package instructions, and place it on a lightly floured surface.
TIPS: If you’re looking for recommendations on working with puff pastry and three different ways to defrost it, check out our informative articles: “How to Thaw Frozen Puff Pastry“, “How to Bake Frozen Puff Pastry in Oven“, and “Tips How to Make Puff Pastry Recipes“.
STEP 7
Roll it out into a 20cm x 20cm square. If you want to be precise, you can use a ruler.
TIPS: If cracks appear while you’re working with puff pastry, don’t worry! Simply moisten them with a little water and then press down with your fingers to bring the dough back together. Easy peasy!
STEP 8
Now, carefully transfer the pastry onto a baking sheet that’s been lined with parchment paper.
STEP 9
Using a knife, cut the dough about 2 cm from each edge, making sure not to cut all the way through.
STEP 10
Then, prick the middle of the crust with a fork.
STEP 11
Pop the baking sheet with the crust into your preheated to 200⁰C (400⁰F) oven and let it bake for around 10 minutes.
TIPS: Looking for some helpful advice on how to preheat your oven and prepare it for baking? Look no further than my articles “How and Why Do You Need to Preheat Oven” and “Top 7 Secrets How to Bake in Oven”.
STEP 12
Once the crust is done, take it out of the oven and let it cool slightly. Now, it’s time to add the cheese filling. Spread it evenly in the center of the crust.
TIPS. Gently press the center of the pastry tart with a spoon. This makes more room for the filling.
STEP 13
Next, place your zucchini ribbons and chopped bacon on top of the cheese filling.
STEP 14
In a small bowl, lightly beat an egg with a whisk, then add some water and give it a good stir.
STEP 15
Brush the edges of the pie with this egg with the egg brush.
TIPS: To apply an egg brush, it’s handy to have a special pastry brush. But if you don’t have one, no worries! You can simply use the tip of a folded paper towel or even just brush the dough with your finger.
STEP 16
Then, pop the baking sheet with the pie into the oven, which should be still preheated to 200⁰C (400⁰F). Let it bake for another 15 minutes.
STEP 17
Once the time is up, take the pie out of the oven and let it cool down a bit. Now, it’s time to add a touch of freshness and flavor. Sprinkle some coarsely chopped parsley leaves on top as a garnish.
STEP 18
Finally, it’s time to dig in! Cut French Zucchini Puff Pastry Tart into equal pieces. Serve it up while it’s still warm, and enjoy every delicious bite. Bon appétit!
