how to cook French Caramelized Onion Puff Pastry Tart?
STEP 1
To start, preheat your oven to 200°C (400⁰F). Grab a red onion and slice it into thin half rings.
STEP 2
Next, cut your bacon strips into squares.
STEP 3
Heat up a frying pan over high heat and pour in a little vegetable oil. Toss in the bacon and fry it on both sides until it turns a beautiful golden brown. Once done, transfer the bacon to a plate.
STEP 4
Now, take the chopped onion and toss it into the same pan where the bacon was fried. Season it with some salt, black pepper, and dried garlic. Reduce the heat and fry the onion until it turns a lovely golden brown. Once it’s done, remove the onion from the pan and let it cool.
TIPS: Fresh ingredients can make a world of difference. Instead of using dried garlic, opt for the pungent flavor of fresh garlic. Just peel, finely chop, and fry it along with the onion for a burst of aromatic goodness.
STEP 5
Take your puff pastry, which should be defrosted according to the package instructions, and place it on a lightly floured surface.
TIPS: If you’re looking for recommendations on working with puff pastry and three different ways to defrost it, check out our informative articles: “How to Thaw Frozen Puff Pastry“, “How to Bake Frozen Puff Pastry in Oven“, and “Tips How to Make Puff Pastry Recipes“.
STEP 6
Roll out the pastry into a 17cm x 22cm rectangle. If you want to be precise, you can use a ruler.
TIPS: If cracks appear while you’re working with puff pastry, don’t worry! Simply moisten them with a little water and then press down with your fingers to bring the dough back together. Easy peasy!
STEP 7
Now, here’s a trick: cut the dough with a knife, but make sure to leave a 2 cm border from each edge. Be careful not to cut all the way through.
STEP 8
Use a fork to prick the middle of the pastry.
STEP 9
Transfer the pastry onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
STEP 10
Pop it into the preheated oven at 200°C (400⁰F) and bake for around 10 minutes.
TIPS: Looking for some helpful advice on how to preheat your oven and prepare it for baking? Look no further than my articles “How and Why Do You Need to Preheat Oven” and “Top 7 Secrets How to Bake in Oven”.
STEP 11
Once the crust is done, take it out and let it cool slightly. Now, it’s time to add the fillings. Spread the golden-brown onion evenly in the center of the crust.
TIPS. Gently press the center of the pastry tart with a spoon. This makes more room for the filling.
STEP 12
Crumble some ricotta on top of the onion, then sprinkle on the fried bacon and some dried marjoram.
TIPS: Not a fan of marjoram? No problem! Experiment with other dried herbs that tickle your fancy and complement your dish.
STEP 13
In a small bowl, lightly beat an egg with a whisk. Add some water and give it a good stir.
STEP 14
Use a brush to coat the edges of the tart with this egg mixture.
TIPS: To apply an egg brush, it’s handy to have a special pastry brush. But if you don’t have one, no worries! You can simply use the tip of a folded paper towel or even just brush the dough with your finger.
STEP 15
Place the baking sheet with the tart back into the oven at 200°C (400⁰F) and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
STEP 16
Once the time is up, take out the tart from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. To add a touch of freshness and flavor, sprinkle some chopped green onions on top as a garnish.
STEP 17
Now comes the exciting part! Grab a knife and cut French Caramelized Onion Puff Pastry Tart into equal, mouthwatering pieces. Make sure to serve it while still warm, as it enhances the delightful flavors. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this scrumptious treat. Bon appétit!
