Easy German Apple Strudel

Ingredients:

for the dough

  • Filo pastry – 6 sheets (250 g)
  • Melted butter – 2 tbsp. (28 g)

for the filling

  • Apples – 3 pcs. (250 g)
  • Raisins – 2 tbsp. (18 g)
  • Sugar – 1/4 cup (50 g)
  • Butter – 1 tbsp. (14 g)
  • Ground cinnamon – 1/2 tsp. (1 g)
  • Breadcrumbs – 1/4 cup (35 g)

  • Ground cinnamon
  • Powdered sugar
  • Whipped cream

Cooking steps:

Filling

  1. Peel, core, and finely chop apples.
  2. Place butter in a large saucepan and melt over medium heat. Add apples, add sugar and ground cinnamon, add raisins, stir. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, for 10 to 15 minutes, until the apples are soft and caramelized. Then remove from heat and cool slightly.
  3. Place the apple mixture in a medium bowl, add breadcrumbs, and stir.

Dough

  1. Thaw the Filo pastry according to the instructions on the package. Cover with a damp kitchen towel to prevent the dough from drying out. Place 1 sheet of the Filo pastry on your work surface. Brush with melted butter.
  2. Cover the top with another sheet of dough and brush with melted butter. Repeat with remaining sheets to create a stack.

Assembly

  1. Spread the apple mixture evenly along the long side of the dough, leaving 6 cm at both ends. Cover the filling with the loose ends of the dough, then roll tightly into a log.
  2. Place the strudel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam side down. Brush the top with the remaining melted butter.
  3. Bake in an oven preheated to 200⁰C (400⁰F) for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven, cool slightly.
  4. Sprinkle the finished strudel with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Serve with whipped cream.
