Tarte Tatin is renowned not only for its fabulous taste but also for its unusually cooking method.

Imagine juicy caramelized apples nestled on a soft “pillow” of puff pastry.

With a few tricks up your sleeve, you’ll nail this dessert on your very first try!

One of the special advantages of this tart is that you don’t need a fancy baking tin.

A plain steel dutch oven or stock pan without plastic handles will do just fine.

So, here’s the deal: you start by cooking the caramel on the stove, then add the apples, and finally cover them with puff pastry.

All that’s left to do is pop the pan in the oven and bake for a mere 20 minutes.

The key to this recipe lies in the caramelized apples.

They are the stars of the show, transforming apples into tender bits with a unique flavor and creamy undertones.

Creating your own caramel is a breeze with just 3 common ingredients: sugar, butter, and a splash of lemon juice.

The lemon juice is essential to prevent the sugar from crystallizing.

The aromas that will fill your kitchen as this tart bakes are simply irresistible.

how to cook Easy Caramelized Apple Tarte Tatin?

STEP 1

To start, preheat your oven to 180°C (350⁰F). Give the apples a good wash, then peel, core, and cut them in half lengthwise.

TIPS: Wondering how to core apples? You can use a special apple corer or a small sharp knife to easily remove the core.

TIPS: Peeling apples can be made simple with a vegetable peeler or a small sharp knife. Choose the method that works best for you.

Toss the prepared apples into a big bowl, sprinkle in some sugar, pour in melted butter, and give it all a gentle mix.

TIPS: Instead of using butter, you can opt for good quality margarine. It works just as well! But keep in mind that margarine contains salt. So, you might want to reduce the amount of salt in the recipe. Just a little heads up!

TIPS: Melt your butter either on the stove or in the microwave – whichever is more convenient for you.

STEP 2

Now, grab a 18cm steel dutch oven and throw in some butter, sugar, and lemon juice.

TIPS: When it comes to lemon juice, you have the choice between using fresh lemons or bottled lemon juice. Both options work just fine, so go with whatever you have on hand or prefer. The tangy flavor of lemon will add a refreshing twist to your dish.

STEP 3

Pop it on medium heat and let it cook for about 5-7 minutes until the caramel syrup turns a lovely amber color. Stir it occasionally, then take it off the heat.

STEP 4

Next, take those apple halves and place them cut side up, nice and snug, along the bottom of the dutch oven with the caramel.

TIPS: When you place the apple halves in the dutch oven, they might not fit perfectly at first. But don’t fret! As they bake, the apples will shrink in size. Once they’re done, you can gently press them down to completely cover the bottom of the dutch oven.

STEP 5

Slide the dutch oven into the preheated oven at 180°C (350⁰F) and let it bake for 15-20 minutes.

TIPS: Looking for some helpful advice on how to preheat your oven and prepare it for baking? Look no further than my articles “How and Why Do You Need to Preheat Oven” and “Top 7 Secrets How to Bake in Oven”.

STEP 6

Once the apples are done, take the dutch oven out of the oven and let it cool down a bit.

STEP 7

While it’s cooling, grab some puff pastry that you’ve defrosted according to the package instructions. Lay it out on a lightly floured surface.

TIPS: If you’re looking for recommendations on working with puff pastry and three different ways to defrost it, check out our informative articles: “How to Thaw Frozen Puff Pastry“, “How to Bake Frozen Puff Pastry in Oven“, and “Tips How to Make Puff Pastry Recipes“.

STEP 8

Then roll it into a 20cm x 20cm square. If you want to be precise, you can even use a ruler.

TIPS: If cracks appear while you’re working with puff pastry, don’t worry! Simply moisten them with a little water and then press down with your fingers to bring the dough back together. Easy peasy!

STEP 9

From that square, cut out a circle that’s 2 cm wider than the diameter of the dutch oven.

TIPS: Want to achieve a perfect circle of your dough? Grab a regular plate or the side of a round springform pan that matches the desired diameter. Then, simply cut out the circle using a sharp knife. Easy peasy!

STEP 10

Carefully place the dough on top of the apples, pressing it down on the sides so it reaches the bottom of the dutch oven.

STEP 11

Give the dough a few pricks with a fork.

TIPS: When baking, it’s important to make holes in your goodies. These little openings allow steam to escape from the filling, preventing any dough from tearing and keeping your tart intact. Trust me, you don’t want your tart to end up looking like a hot mess!

STEP 12

Now, slide the dutch oven back into the oven, which you’ve preheated to 200°C (400⁰F). Let it bake for another 25-30 minutes until it turns a beautiful golden brown.

STEP 13

Once the tart is all done, take it out of the oven and let it sit in the dutch oven for about an hour.

TIPS: Lastly, a word of caution. The dutch oven with the tart will be piping hot, so make sure to let it cool down before handling it.

STEP 14

Then, run a knife along the edge of the tart, separating it from the sides of the dutch oven. Next, grab a large plate and carefully flip the dutch oven over, allowing the tart to gracefully land on the plate.
